Driver Charged In Crash That Killed 4

WINSTON-SALEM -- The injured driver of a vehicle who fled from the scene of a crash that killed four people Tuesday evening after crashing into a concrete wall at Forsyth Memorial Gardens off Yadkinville Highway has been charged by Winston-Salem police.Police said Gerardo Cruz Garcia, 18, has been charged with four counts of death by motor vehicle, one count of hit-and-run and one count of driving without an operator's license.Police said six people were in the 1992 Chevrolet Lumina that was speeding when it careened off the road and crashed.
Three of the passengers died at the scene. They have been identified as Sergio Marroquin Santiago, 17, of Winston-Salem, his brother, Noe Marroquin Santiago, 15, of Winston-Salem and Rey David Martinez, 24.A fourth passenger, Manuel Ivan Andres Jr., 18, died at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.A fifth passenger, Ricardo Salgado, 18, remains at WFUBMC in stable condition.Both speed and alcohol are considered to be factors in the crash. Police said beer cans were located in and around the vehicle. The speed limit at the location of the crash was 45 mph. Police wouldn't say how fast they thought the vehicle was traveling at the time of the crash.Cruz was located at his home on Yarborough Road Wednesday morning, which was a little more than a mile from the crash scene, then taken to WFUBMC where he was listed in stable condition Thursday.He was given no bond and was scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 19.Police originally listed Cruz's first name as Geraldo, but made the revision Thursday.
