Pee Wee Has A Close Call

Wallburg Family Has A Little Miracle

A Little Miracle

It was Friday evening about 9:00, and my parents and I were sitting around the kitchen table. I was giving our 3 dogs small bites of a block of cheese that had come out of the wrap and was getting hard. I had just thrown Pee Wee, an older terrier-chihuahua mix, a piece about the size of the end of my thumb, then I heard her choking.

I quickly grabbed her, attempted thumping her back and then tried the Heimlich maneuver, but neither was helping. Opening her mouth I could just see the end of it; I then stuck my finger down her throat but couldn't move it. By this time, approximately 1 minute had passed and her little eyes was starting to bulge. I could tell she wasn't getting any oxygen. My elderly parents, who are Pee Wee's owners, were sitting next to me , and they were getting very upset.

Dad yelled "stick the end of a knife handle down her throat"! I attempted that, and felt the cheese go further down her throat. I attempted the Heimlich again, nothing was happening! I ran for the bedroom where my wife was, yelling "Beverly, help me Pee Wees' dying"! Pee Wee was fading quickly as I ran back to the table. Beverly went through our utensil drawer in the kitchen and found a candy-chocolate dipping spoon that the center is cut out of. Beverly came running to me with it just as the dog died!

As my father is crying out "No, no Pee Wee don't leave me", I yelled "Pray" and knew that I had to keep trying at that point.

Her heart beat was gone, no respiration, her tongue was hanging out, blue now, as well as her gums. Beverly ran from the room crying, as was my parents sitting at the table. I looked at them, knowing their little dog was especially my 87 year old father's best friend; I HAD to keep trying!

I grabbed the plastic spoon, opened the dogs mouth where I could see down her throat and it slid right behind the cheese when I was able to pull it right out! I blew several breaths thru her nose-nothing. Next, I put my hand around her muzzle and started blowing in her mouth (her whole nose and mouth covered with my mouth).

It had been almost 3 minutes now and all of us are crying. After about 30 seconds of breaths going into Pee Wee, I saw an eye flicker! I yelled to mom and dad "Pray, pray" and I kept blowing. Suddenly, I felt and heard her exhale and take a couple of small ragged breaths. I gave her a couple more and she started breathing, her eyes opened and she was back!

After approximately 15 minutes she could again support herself. I called a vets office that was open late, they told me as long as her tongue and gums were pink again (which they were) and she was breathing alright, she should be ok.

We gave God a lot of thanks that evening, knowing He had restored my parent’s best friend to health. She was without oxygen for 3 minutes; dead for about 1full minute and now she is perfectly fine. Miracles do still happen.

The grateful Davis Family
